After seeing the devastation and the aftermath of the Moore, Oklahoma tornado, I am convinced that a well stocked emergency kit is as needed after a tornado as it is after any other catastrophic disaster.

50 tornadoes in 24 hours - some massive. The most destructive tornado hit Moore, Oklahoma and already over 50 are confirmed dead. They had 20 to 30 minutes warning but with winds over 200 MPH, it wasn't enough to keep everyone safe. That tornado was over a mile and a half wide and was on the ground for over an hour.

A massive tornado over a mile and a half wide spent over an hour on the ground in Moore Oklahoma. The enormous destruction incluceded an elementary school. Its too soon to know the number of casualties.

Two hospital workers are the latest confirmed cases of the new SARS-like coronavirus. The latest stats are 40 infected and 20 fatalities. That's a 50% mortality rate. Medical professionals are going into high gear to undersrand and stop this outbreak.

Mass Shooting at Batman Movie Reminds Us of the Need For Trauma First Aid Supplies in Every Facility
In Aurora, Colorado a gunman opened fire in a crowded theater at the premiere of the latest Batman movie. As of this time 12 are dead and 50 wounded. The whole incident is just sickening, but reminds us of the need to be prepared for just such emergencies.

Corn prices hit an all-time high and soybean prices hit a record high as well amid hightened concern over the impact of drought in the United States. Over 61% of the United States is in moderate to severe drought and over 70% of the corn and soybean crops are currently affected by the drought.

The drought story is just getting worse and there is no significant weather relief predicted. 61% of the continental United State is now considered by the Drought Monitor to be in moderate to exceptional drought.

I was very surprised to read that 56% of the continental U.S. is now considered to be in a state of drought by the weekly Drought Monitor. Apparently this is the driest year since 1988.

In 2010, the icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull erupted and sent an ash plume across Europe that shut down aviation for 6 days. Now a neighboring and much larger icelandic volcano, Katla, is showing signs of activity.The concern is that the last time Katla erupted in 1918 its ash plume was 5 times larger than the 2102 Eyjafjallajökull plume.

Every school in America has diligently prepared emergency plans. These plans are key to a successful response to various emergency and disaster scenarios that are possible in your area. However, an emergency plan on its own with not be successful without (1) prepared students and staff and (2) the right emergency supplies each staff member and all students.

The Japanese government warned its citizens to prepare for a 34 meter mega-tsunami in the case of a triple quake. Early warning and fast evacuation would seem to be the only hope in such a scenario.

What countries are on the list of who has an earthquake early warning system that can provide a mass broadcast early warning that can provide time to take drop cover and hold on? Thoes with an erthquake early warning system include: Japan, Mexico, Taiwan, Turkey, and Romania. Who doesn't have an earthquake early warning system? Yes, you guessed it, the United States.

Many schools practice some types of drills but not others. All schools do have some kinds of emergency plans. We find that the greatest deficit in most schools' planning is not their plan, it is the emergency kits and supplies to support them.
